Matthias Ringmann: Grammatica Figurata

Interjection - a Fool

INTERIECTIO PARS ORATionis ultima: est quae significat mentis affectum voce incognita. Et figuratur per stultum/ut docet figura sequens & distichon adiectum.

Octavam (quae Rhomanis est ultima) partem
Moribus insinuat noliger ipse suis.

THE INTERJECTION is the last part of speech and it is that which shows the emotion of the mind by an unrecognized word. And it is represented by the Fool, as the following figure and accompanying distich show:

The scoundrel himself sneaks into his customs
The eighth part (which is the last for the Romans)
CUIUS SIGNIFICATIONIS: Si laetantis. quia laeticiam significat. Charta. Fatuus cui adiung[i]tur facies ridens.
Si dolentis. Char. Stultus penes quem facies dolens. Si admirantis. Char. Stultus cum facie admirante. Si timentis. Char. Fatuus vultu timorem praeseferente: quae omnia hijs qtuor imaginibus videre licet. Sic ergo sive generaliter sive specialiter ludendo is qui inter ludendum plures habuit iactus/ludum ipsum lucratus est.

OF WHAT MEANING: If of a happy meaning, because it means happiness. Card: Idiot with a laughing face joined to him. If sad, Card: Fool who has a sad face. If amazed, Card: Fool with an amazed face. If afraid: Card: Idiot with a face demonstrating fear. All this can be seen in these four images. So by playing either general or specific cards in this way, he who in the course of play has had more card-throws, has won the game itself.
