In the story a female devil and a female magician play for the souls of two mortal lovers. See the
story and the
actors and
pictures of some scenes.
- Recently detected: A mystery-film of Roman Polanski, (based on a novel by Arturo Perez-Reverte) "the
Ninth Gate", is also from 1999. It uses some of the Tarot Motifs, which appear in a mysterious
book from the year 1667, which according to the plot was written by the devil himself.
Fool, Hermit, Hanging Man, Towers, the Lovers motif and the Lady with the beast with some reminescene to the Strength card of Harris/Crowley are recognizable "old" woodcut motifs.
All 9 figures of the book are shown at this internet-page: and
described at
this internet-page (see below).
- First Gate "Silence is golden."
A knight rides through a fortified town. With his finger on his lips, he counsels prudence or silence.
- Second Gate "Open that which is closed."
A hermit before a closed door. A lantern on he ground and two keys in his hand. Next to him, a sign that resembles the Hebrew letter Teth.
- Third Gate "Wasted breath keeps a secret."
A Vagrant, or a pilgrim, heads towards a bridge which spans a river. At each end, a fortified door bars access. On a cloud, a bowman aims in the direction of the road leading to the bridge.
- Fourth Gate " Chance is not the same for all."
A jester before a stone maze. The entrance is closed by a door. Three dice on the ground each reveal three of their faces, showing the numbers 1, 2, and 3.
- Fifth Gate "In Vain"
A miser, or a merchant, counts his gold pieces. Behind him, Death holds an hourglass in one hand and a fork in the other.
- Sixth Gate " I enrich myself with death"
A hanged man, similar to that of the Tarot, his hands behind his back, hung by one foot from the crenellation of the wall surrounding a castle, next to a closed postern gate. A hand clad in a gauntlet brandishes a burning sword from a loophole.
- Seventh Gate " The disciple outshines the master."
A king and a begger play chess on a chess board with white squares. The moon can be seen throught the window. Beneath this and next to a closed door, the dogs are fighting.
- Eighth Gate "Virtue is conquered"
Before the fortified walls of a town, a kneeling woman offers her nexk to the executioner. In the background, a wheel of fortune with three people on it-one at the summit, another climbing and another descending.
- Ninth Gate "I know now that shadows comefrom the light."
A seven headed dragon is ridden by a naked woman. She holds an open book and a half moon conceals her genitals. In the background, a castle is in flames, its door, as on the other eight plates, is closed.

- New Tarot history sites: A new, rather tasteful site started to exist with tarothistory.com. The site is young and there is not too much content, but the design is splendid and the commentaries have high quality. Trionfi.com is mentioned within the Links section:
"A site dedicated to the early history of Tarot Cards, with an emphasis on the courts of Milan and Ferrara. This site has many very talented historians working together to discover the origins of Tarot Cards. A note: Trionfi's content is sometimes influenced by the desire to present their interesting "5x14 theory" of the origin of Tarot, a highly controversial theory." We had to smile about "the highly controversial theory".
Another new site with a fine, small difference in name, tarot-history.com is the translation of the French site
of Jean-Claude Flornoy, Cartier-enlumineur, already in existence since 1999. It has its concentration on the Tarot de Marseille.
